What is a Freelance Photographer?

A freelance photographer creates photographs as a contract or self-employed photographer. This pertains to any discipline of photography, i.e. portrait, food, sport, architecture photography etc. Commercial photography, being part of freelance photography, is the type of photography used to help promote or sell a service or product. Most importantly, it supports a corporation, small business or organization in improving their bottom line results. To clarify, commercial photography is oftentimes also referred to as advertising photography. Therefore, depending on the market segment, the client, product or service being sold, it can refer to product photography, architecture photography, industrial photography, lifestyle photography, and even fashion photography. A seasoned, versed and capable freelance photographer can successfully and effectively encompass several of these photographic disciplines and deliver outstanding photographs in each of them.

You don’t take a photograph, you make it…

These were wise words spoken by Ansel Adams, who unbeknownst to many also was a commercial, or, freelance photographer. One of the masters, the legendary American photographer, understood that each created image has to be felt by the photographer with their heart and soul. In other words, the only effective way to truly posses the strong visual impact desired in fine art and commercial photography alike. A good freelance photographer possesses that ability.

Decades later, despite the many revolutionary technological advancements in digital photography, ‘real’ photography still remains a heartfelt art. This is relevant especially in the midst of what by many today is considered a prevailing ‘visual pollution’. Imagine, there were an estimated 1.45 trillion photos taken in 2020…depending on one’s perspective, that can attribute to a lot of ‘visual contamination’ and clutter, which then can lead to ‘visual overwhelm and saturation’.

Why working with a freelance photographer?

“Photography is not about the thing photographed. It is about how that thing looks photographed.” – Gary Winogrand, or put another way: “The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words.” – Elliott Erwitt.

Both of theses great masters were advertising, commercial and freelance photographers.

Being a freelance photographer, I capture photographs that help clients to market, promote and sell their offerings in my role as a fine art and commercial photographer. With my long term experience, I assist clients in creating concepts that allow their vision coming to life. Most importantly, I view my role as delivering the visual equivalent of the ‘icing on the cake’ for my clients’ branding strategy and target audience.

My portfolios contain the heartfelt artistic expression of the confluence of light, shapes, patterns, color and more. All coming together in a split fraction of time. As a freelance photographer, architectural photographer, hospitality photographer, as well as industrial photographer, I am foremost a fine art photographer. Above all, I bring that fine art aspect to my commercial photography, my reason for leaving a promising and unrelated corporate career in 1999.

Benefits to clients

My clients include advertising agencies, hotel brands, architects and large construction firms. I have worked with production houses, interior designers, and industrial manufacturers. They recognize the value brought by high quality images to effective brand positioning and differentiation in the marketplace. This is one of my roles and contributions as a freelance photographer. The reliable and consistent creation of strong and effective visual communication pieces.

Clients benefit from my visual approach. Whether my photographs are used as commercial photography for marketing and promotional applications, or as wall décor. I strive to create timeless visual communication pieces, while delivering exactly what my clients want, just better.
